A new haematological staining method which proved to be a solution to poor staining of hypercellular bone marrow smears was invented by two final year undergraduates following the B.Sc Medical Laboratory Sciences Degree Programme, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences under the supervision of Dr. D. Gunawardena, Consultant Haematologist, Department of Pathology Faculty of Medical Sciences and Dr. S. Suresh, Consultant Haematologist, Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama.
The new staining method was named as “I & J Giemsa staining method” and has been applied for patenting.

The researchers, Mr. Isuru Namal Priyankara and Ms. Hiranthi Jayamanne also launched a laboratory handbook describing their new discovery, titled, “I & J Giemsa and other Romanowsky stains for blood and bone marrow smears” which is a source of Romanowsky staining methods and their preparation methods on 20th November 2017 at the Annual Academic Sessions-2017 of the College of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Sri Lanka.
